ROGERSVILLE — Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office deputies weren’t amused Wednesday evening when a man’s claim that there was an unconscious woman lying in the Justice Center parking lot turned out to be a hoax.

The alleged prank landed Larry Don Epps, 64, 450 Hickory Cove Road, Rogersville, in jail charged with filing a false report and public intoxication.

Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, HCSO Deputies Jason Montgomery and Reba Mathews responded to a man later identified as Epps “beating on the exterior of the jail entrance.”

“I asked the male if he needed any assistance and the male stated there was an unresponsive female lying in the parking lot of the Justice Center,” Montgomery stated in his report.

“Deputy Matthews and myself attempted to locate the female. (Epps) pointed to several different locations.”

Montgomery added, “I approached Mr. Epps and he began to laugh and stated, ‘I got you.’”

Epps reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.

Epps was placed under arrest.

As of Thursday Epps remained held in the Hawkins County Jail on $750 bond.

Arraignment was set for Monday morning in Sessions Court.
