The gourmet sub sandwich shop bakes fresh bread daily, and meat and vegetables are sliced fresh in-house every day. The restaurant prides itself on using the freshest ingredients available, including meats with no additives and no vegetable-based fillers.
The restaurant was founded in 1983 in Charleston, Ill., by 19-year-old Jimmy John Liautaud.
“Jimmy knew that if he kept it simple he could create the world’s greatest gourmet sandwich. With a handful of cookbooks checked out from his local library, Jimmy perfected his award-winning bread. After creating four sandwiches, Jimmy tested them on friends and family, receiving praise he needed to press on. With no hesitation he opened the very first Jimmy John’s,” according to the company website.
To start, Liautaud rented a space for $200 a month, and could afford only used equipment consisting of a refrigerator, a chest freezer, an oven and a meat slicer. The first Jimmy John’s served soda with no ice (there was no room in the budget for an ice machine).
“As any good business story goes, things were not easy in the beginning. So Jimmy John Liautaud did what any young entrepreneur would do — he took to the streets with armfuls of free sandwiches,” the story reads. “College kids loved his irreverent attitude and dirt-cheap prices. The fact that he delivered was icing on the cake.”
The restaurant grew through the years and now has more than 1,200 locations.
Jimmy John’s offers a variety of eight-inch sub sandwiches for $4.75, or giant club sandwiches for $5.75. You can also order any sub minus the vegetables and sauce for $3.75. A low-carb lettuce wrap is available, as well as the “J.J. Gargantuan” with lots of Genoa salami, sliced smoked ham, capicola, roast beef, turkey and provolone on a homemade French bun, topped with onions, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and homemade Italian dressing.
In addition to dine-in service, Jimmy John’s offers catering, including party platters, party subs and boxed lunches.
And Jimmy John’s offers delivery — even of one sub — within a certain area. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
