RICHMOND — Anita Ashby, system director of flight services for Wellmont Health System, has received a prestigious award in Virginia recognizing her efforts to deliver outstanding emergency medical services.

Ashby recently received the Governor’s Award for Nurse with Outstanding Contribution to EMS. Chosen from 11 regional EMS award winners across Virginia, she was honored for her emergency medical nursing skills and cooperation and leadership with other EMS personnel and agencies.

Gregory Woods, executive director of the Southwest Virginia EMS Council, nominated Ashby for the award.

“Anita has been integrally involved in EMS at the local, regional and state levels for more than a decade,” Woods said in his recommendation. “Although she is tremendously busy, Anita never says no to any request made of her that will enhance care and improve outcomes in the region. Her compassion, professionalism and willingness to assist have earned Anita the respect of her peers.”

Wellmont’s system director since last November, Ashby supervises the flight team on WellmontOne Air Transport and the medical flight team on Med-Flight II, a program of the Virginia State Police.

She periodically still participates in medflights as part of the care team.

Ashby has been involved in public safety agencies for 20 years and has worked for Wellmont since 2000.

She has been system manager of flight services for Wellmont, chief flight nurse on Med-Flight II and assistant nurse manager and staff nurse at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Ashby serves on the Virginia Governor’s Emergency Medical Services Advisory Board and the board of directors of the Southwest Virginia EMS Council, and is a member of the Tennessee and Virginia medical evaluation committees.

“This statewide recognition of Anita is a much deserved honor,” said Denny DeNarvaez, Wellmont’s president and CEO. “Anita sets high standards for herself and her flight crews and produces outstanding results.”

DeNarvaez said patients “receive superior care when they are flown on WellmontOne and Med-Flight II, and our region and the commonwealth are well served with someone in a leadership role who is so committed to delivering high quality emergency medical services.”
