Deputy fatally shoots suspect in Anderson County

Associated Press • Oct 13, 2012 at 10:42 AM

CLINTON, Tenn. — Authorities say what began as a routine traffic stop in Anderson County ended with a deputy fatally shooting a suspect.

Sheriff Paul White and District Attorney General Dave Clark told WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/X6gtQU) that the deputy initiated the stop on Saturday morning and the driver pulled to the side of the road. However, after stopping, the driver immediately fled the vehicle and ran into a nearby wooded area. The deputy followed and the two ended up in a scuffle in which the driver was fatally shot.

Authorities said they are still trying to determine exactly what led to the shooting.

No names were immediately released, but the deputy has been put on routine leave while the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looks into the matter.
