KINGSPORT — A section of northbound John B. Dennis Highway was temporarily closed Friday morning after a city trash truck overturned, blocking both lanes of traffic.

No other vehicles were damaged in the crash, while the driver sustained minor injuries.

The wreck occurred shortly after 10 a.m. at the exit ramp to East Stone Drive. Kingsport Police Officer Mike Burnette said the trash truck had been traveling in the left hand lane when, according to statements from the driver, a car to his right abruptly merged into his path.

To allegedly avoid a collision the trash truck driver veered left, placing his left side tires in the grass median. Burnette said the truck lost traction then reentered the highway, where it spun and overturned.

Northbound traffic was diverted onto Stone Drive as crews removed the trash truck and cleaned the roadway of debris. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
