BRISTOL, Tenn. — In what is becoming an all-too-familiar story in recent weeks, rescuers Sunday responded to two Sullivan County lakes for a presumed drowning and two near drownings.

As of late Sunday evening, members of the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew were leading a search of South Holston Lake near the Highway 421 boat ramp in far eastern Sullivan County for a swimmer who disappeared around 5:15 p.m.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart said two males ages 19 and 20 from Charlotte, N.C., were attempting to swim across South Holston Lake from the 421 Boat Ramp about 100 yards to an island associated with the Highway 421 bridge.

About halfway across, the 19-year-old began to tire and struggle. The 20-year-old went back to help and reportedly nearly drowned himself before being saved by a passing boat.
