Families Free supports women released from jail and their families

When Melissa was released from the Carter County jail earlier this month, she had few personal belongings and no place to stay.Melissa had been visiting the area from Michigan when she was arrested. With no place to go, she turned to the Salvation Army in Johnson City. There, she learned about a program that’s helping her get back on her feet and ultimately turn her life around.Families Free, a non-profit organization, serves children and families affected by incarceration by providing preparation and assistance to women ready to re-enter society. With help from Families Free, Melissa has temporary shelter through the Interfaith Hospitality Network, and is getting assistance with employment. Melissa and her son lived in this area years ago and would like to stay here.If not for the help she’s received, Melissa believes she would be right back where she started. “In a very bad abusive domestic situation,” she said.Read the expanded version of this report in the print edition or the enhanced electronic version of the Kingsport Times-News.
