He allegedly said the wreck occurred after his vehicle was struck from behind by another car, but police report no evidence was found to support the claim.
Douglas Wayne McReynolds, 41, of 1316 Harrison Ave., was charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain control and violation of implied consent. The wreck occurred at 1312 Harrison Avenue, just down the street from his home address.
According to a Kingsport police arrest report, officers were dispatched the home at 7:55 a.m. The responding officer says McReynolds' 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara was traveling south when it exited the road and drove through a fence at the residence.
Police say McReynolds' vehicle continued through the yard and went over a retaining wall, then came to a stop at 1308 Harrison Ave.
According to the report, McReynolds told police his SUV had been stuck in the rear by another vehicle, causing the crash. The officer notes the vehicle displayed no evidence of such a rear impact.
The report says McReynolds was unsteady on his feet and nearly feel down on several occasions. The officer reports that when he asked questions to McReynolds, "he gave answers that pertained to nothing I had asked."
Police say he was arrested after failing a number of field sobriety tests, then transported to the city jail.
