Kingsport police allegedly found a man attempting to remove alcoholic beverages and frozen food from an unoccupied home's refrigerator on Thursday, prompting his arrest on burglary charges.

The suspect claimed he was helping a friend clean up the house, but didn't know the friend's name.

According to arrest reports, the incident began at 320 Clark Ave., around 7 p.m. The resident told officers he found a man sitting within his open garage and asked what he was doing.

The suspect, later identified as Brian D. Reynolds, 41, of 905 Quillen St., allegedly replied, "waiting on his buddy." The resident reports telling him to get off his property, with Reynolds initially walking towards Quillen Street.

After Reynolds left, the resident discovered a jar of change and bag of tools had been gathered next to the garage door. He called police, who responded to take a report.

While on scene the resident next door, 324 Clark Ave., arrived home to find their patio door unlocked. The officer reports going inside the home and locating Reynolds in the kitchen.

"Reynolds had gathered several items of frozen food from the freezer and alcoholic beverages from the refrigerator, and was attempting to place them in a tote when I encountered him," reads the officer's narrative.

Police say Reynolds had an odor of alcohol, spoke with slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet. A pint of whiskey was allegedly found in his sock, half a joint in his pack of cigarettes.

"Reynolds stated that he was at a friend's house helping him clean up, but did not know the friend's name," reports the officer.

Reynolds also allegedly said his friend was in the home, but a search of the residence found no one.

Reynolds was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, theft of less than $500, public intoxication and simple possession of marijuana. The food an alcohol he was allegedly attempting to remove were valued at $50.
