KINGSPORT — A Kingsport woman was killed Monday afternoon when she walked in front of a vehicle on Sullivan Gardens Parkway.

The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in front of the BP Fast Lane, 2512 Sullivan Gardens Parkway.

According to a news release from Kingsport Police Department Patrolman Dale Farmer, pedestrian Barbara Collins, 61, of Pearl Street, Kingsport, was crossing Sullivan Gardens Parkway east to west when she stepped in front of a northbound Pontiac Grand Am driven by Scott A. Jones, 32, of Dennison Avenue, Kingsport.

Farmer said Jones attempted to avoid hitting Collins by braking and steering to the left, but the Pontiac struck Collins.

After the wreck witnesses huddled together at the curb to pray, and one witness performed CPR on Collins until EMS arrived, transporting her to Holston Valley Medical Center.

An investigation is ongoing by the KPD’s Traffic Unit, but Farmer said based on witness statements and other information collected, charges are not expected to be filed against Jones.
