Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, jurors sent word to U.S. District Court Judge Thomas W. Phillips that they wanted to adjourn for the day and return today to resume deliberations. Minutes later, panelists filed into the courtroom, the faces of several appearing tight.
Thomas sent them home around 4:30 p.m. after renewing his instructions to avoid all media accounts of the highly publicized case. He made no inquiry as to how close they were to a verdict. They are to return by 9 a.m. today. Jurors have debated Kernell's guilt for about 10 hours since Tuesday.
