Kingsport police report a man snatched a woman's prescriptions outside a Kingsport pharmacy early Tuesday morning, then attempted to hide from officers beneath a nearby bush.

Darryl Maurice Cornette, 41, of 1036 Dogwood Ave., Norton Va., was subsequently arrested and charged with robbery, auto burglary, evading and resisting arrest.

The incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. at Walgreens, 1420 West Stone Drive. A police report says the victim, 35-years-old, had picked up her prescriptions for Lorazepam and Percocet. As she exited the store and was walking to her vehicle a man, later identified as Cornette, approached her and asked to bum a cigarette.

When she placed her prescriptions in the car and reached in for a cigarette, Cornette allegedly pushed her out of the way and grabbed the pharmacy bag she'd placed inside. Cornette, who the victim reported not knowing, then ran from the parking lot.

An officer spotted the suspect, "a short distance away," according to police, and told him to stop. The report says the man refused, "ran and tried to hide under a bush."

Police surrounded the bush, with the suspect allegedly kicking officers who tried to extract him. When he was successfully pulled out, he continued resisting by pushing and jerking away before being placed under arrest.

Police report finding Cornette in possession of prescription bags and bottles labeled with the victim's name.
