According to Kingsport Public Relations Director Tim Whaley, officer Thomas Wayt, a seven-year veteran of the department, was the officer involved. He is currently on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for the department when an officer is involved in a shooting.
The victim was Perry Douglas Long, 42, of 2010 Bruce Street.
Central Dispatch receive a call at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, reporting a female had been beaten and was running outside of 2010 Bruce Street. A man brandishing a firearm was reportedly near the home.
Wayt responded to the scene, and according to Police Chief Gale Osborne, the suspect pointed his handgun at the officer. Wayt then shot Long, who was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center.
Osborne noted a young child of the couple was home at the time of the incident, but was not injured.
Whaley said the city could release no further information on the incident, as it's under investigation of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
