Staff Report • Feb 2, 2010 at 12:00 AM

A drug deal gone bad has left a Cocke County teenager in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. Newport Patrol Officer Amy Elswick said the shooting occurred Monday night in the parking lot of the Bryant Town Car Wash on Cosby Road.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found two spent 9 mm shells in the parking lot and, a short time later, they were sent to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County, to check out a shooting victim who was to be flown by medical helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Police learned that Dustin "DJ" Smith Jr., 18, Hull Way, Del Rio, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina with Terry Owens, 31, Fox and Hound Way, Newport, when Smith was shot. Richard Anthony Desroches, 29, Hannon Road, Newport, was arrested a short time later. He told Elswick he went to the car wash to sell 80 Roxycontin pills to Smith and Owens.
