KINGSPORT — A Kingsport woman who alerted police to an alleged domestic assault, prompting the arrest of a man for resisting and evading arrest, has been charged with filing a false report.

According to an incident report at the Kingsport Police Department, Carolyn Hellmer, 60, of 2213 Jett Road, was arrested about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday. Police said Hellmer walked into the police station with a written and signed statement, advising police she had lied about an alleged assault at her home on Sunday night.

According to previously filed incident reports, Hellmer called police Sunday about 9:15 p.m. She said Donald Burkett, 28, had been living with her, but that day he had “started going off and destroyed his room.”

Hellmer then claimed that Burkett pushed her down, causing her to bump the back of her head, and demanded the keys to her Dodge Stratus. Hellmer said she complied due to her fear of further assault.

On Tuesday Hellmer changed her story, claiming she had “simply fell down instead of being shoved,” according to the police report. Hellmer added that she willingly gave Burkett the keys when he asked to borrow her car.

The false report Hellmer filed Sunday night led police to look for her automobile. An officer spotted it on Spring Street at 10:22 p.m. and attempted to initiate a stop.

The car pulled in the parking lot of the Chop House, 1700 N. Eastman Road. According to the officer’s report it came to a sudden stop, with Burkett — who was later found to be driving without a license — abruptly exiting the car and running across North Eastman Road.

Police said Burkett continued up C Street, with officers cornering him a few minutes later at Jefferson Elementary School, 2216 Westmoreland Ave. Burkett allegedly struggled with police and refused commands, forcing them to pin him against a wall to apply handcuffs.

Burkett was arrested and charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, and driving without a license.
