MORRISTOWN - Members of the American Patriot Taxpayers group said during Tuesday night's "Tea Party" open-forum meeting that their message of less intrusive, constitutionally limited government is gaining traction in East Tennessee and the U.S.

"Our freedoms are being taken away from us," said organizer Tony Shreeve of Dandridge, who helped start the tea party group last fall.

About 50 people from seven East Tennessee counties attended the open meeting, which is held the second Tuesday of each month at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.

"Our goal tonight coming out of the New Year is to get people involved and grow our group. We've got Independents, we've got Democrats, and we've got Republicans," said Shreeve, who called himself an independent conservative.
