Greeneville woman charged with 5 counts of statutory rape gets pretrial diversion

The Greeneville Sun is reporting that a woman charged last year with five counts of aggravated statutory rape has been granted a pretrial diversion by the Third Judicial District Attorney General's office.Prosecution of Sherry Melton, 38, of Wykle Road, will be "suspended" for a period of five years. Melton was indicted by a Greene County grand jury in March 2009 on aggravated statutory rape charges in connection with alleged incidents involving a juvenile male victim. The charge was classified as aggravated statutory rape rather than simply statutory rape since Melton is more than 10 years older than the male involved in the situation.
