KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man was arrested Monday after allegedly striking an acquaintance — whom he suspected of sleeping with his wife — in the head with a baseball bat.

According to a report at the Kingsport Police Department, the incident occurred about 3:40 p.m. at 1129½ Center St. The victim, Stephen L. Shaffer, 43, told police he was supposed to pick up a washing machine given to him by Earl B. Clevinger.

But when Shaffer arrived, according to the police report, Clevinger accused him of sleeping with his wife. Then Clevinger, 50, of the residence, allegedly hit Shaffer on the head with a baseball bat. He is also accused of cutting a passenger side tire of Shaffer’s vehicle.

The responding officer notes Shaffer suffered a knot on the side of his head but refused medial treatment. A tire on Shaffer’s vehicle was also observed to be flat.

Clevinger, who the officer reports had been drinking and was argumentative, was charged with aggravated assault and vandalism. He was transported to the Kingsport City Jail, while the baseball bat was collected as evidence.
