Morristown residents displaced by flames provided temporary shelter

Staff Report • Dec 22, 2009 at 12:00 AM

MORRISTOWN — More than two-dozen residents of a Morristown apartment complex displaced by a weekend fire have been moved to other accommodations by the property owner.

And one Morristown firefighter will be spending the holidays on a gimpy ankle after breaking it while working the fire at Fairway West Apartments, 2501 N. Economy Road.

Morristown Fire Department Deputy Chief Clark Taylor said the blaze was reported 12:29 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters found flames shooting from the third-floor of the brick building that housed 10 units. All the residents, who appeared to be Hispanic, safely evacuated the building, he said. Morristown Fire Marshal Eual Noah credited a functioning smoke alarm system with preventing the loss of “multiple lives.”
