KINGSPORT — A Kingsport school bus crashed into a tree in the front yard of a home Friday morning, with the 76-year-old driver receiving treatment at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Two students were on the bus at the time of the accident but were not injured, said Amy Greear, Kingsport City Schools community relations coordinator. They attend John Sevier Middle School and Dobyns-Bennett High School.

The wreck occurred about 6:15 a.m. at the corner of Bays View Road and Sherman Place. Kingsport Police Department Officer Noah Tidwell said the driver had engaged the air brake while on an incline, then went to the back of the bus. Tidwell was not sure why he exited the driver’s seat.

The driver, Jimmie Lane of Kingsport, was standing in the aisle when the bus began to roll, Tidwell said. Lane attempted to run back to the front of the bus and engage the brakes but was unsuccessful.

Tidwell said the bus traveled about 25 or 30 feet before hitting the tree, located in the front yard of 698 Sherman Place. It was a low-speed impact, and Lane later received stitches to his head.

“The impact shook him up, so he wasn’t really for sure what (his head) hit (in the bus),” Tidwell said.

No charges are expected to be placed in the incident. The bus was towed from the scene.
