Businesses benefit from I-40 detour

Rocks tumbled into the roadway at mile marker 2.6 along Interstate 40 around 2 a.m. Sunday and the change to the Tri-Cities area was almost immediate for local law enforcement, tourism officials and hotel owners.
“We’ve seen a sudden spike at our Comfort Inn location at Exit 24,” hotel owner Summit Bakshi said. “Our new Holiday Inn Express location at Exit 17 has seen it jump quite a bit also. We had an additional 10-15 rooms last night and we foresee this happening for some time now.”
The increase in business is a welcome change for hotel owners who are typically slow this time of year, in addition to a slow summer due to the recession.
