KINGSPORT — A Kingsport woman was arrested Monday during an alleged shoplifting spree at Kingsport Pavilion.

According to an incident report from the Kingsport Police Department, the woman stole more than $2,200 in clothing from five department stores.

Brenda Charlene Martin, 48, of 5016 Boss Road, was arrested after an employee of Kohl’s contacted Kingsport police. The employee suspected Martin, who had exited Kohl’s and was in Old Navy when police arrived, of stealing merchandise.

The responding officer waited for Martin in the parking lot. The incident report says she was carrying a large purse, appeared nervous and was uncooperative when questioned about the possibility of theft. One officer stayed with Martin while another went into Old Navy to review security footage.

According to police, it was at this point that Martin admitted to stealing merchandise. She removed several items from her purse and advised there were stolen items from other stores in her car. The police report says Martin wanted to return the items and “make things right.”

Within Martin’s car police recovered more than $2,200 worth of merchandise from five separate Kingsport Pavilion department stores: $365 from Dress Barn, $435 from Maurices, $378.48 from Lane Bryant, $454.98 from Old Navy and $567.99 from Kohl’s.

The police report says all items were returned to the proper stores.

Kohl’s was the only business that expressed a wish to press charges against Martin.

Martin was arrested on a charge of theft of more than $500 and transported to the Kingsport jail.
