ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office has charged two people with 26 counts of burglary, among other charges, in connection with a rash of church burglaries that was first discovered last Friday.

Sheriff Roger Christian said about 2:30 a.m. Thursday a deputy saw a vehicle slowly passing a church and attempted a traffic stop to check out the occupants.

The vehicle fled but was eventually stopped.

Christian said both occupants — Jared Tyler Hicks, 18, 188 Byington Road, Rogersville, and Keith Crownover, 18, 214 Smyrna Road, Surgoinsville — have given statements to the HCSO incriminating themselves in the 26 Hawkins County church burglaries reported last Friday, Sunday and Monday.

Christian added that the suspects had also broken into a house and got away with a large quantity of money and other loot. Aside from 26 counts of burglary, they are also charged with two counts of attempted burglary, one count of aggravated burglary and seven counts of theft.

Eleven church burglaries were discovered last Friday, followed by another 12 on Sunday and then three on Monday. Three of the churches were hit twice.

The rash of Hawkins County church burglaries was confined to an area between Church Hill and Rogersville and between Beech Creek Road and near the Virginia state line.

Both suspects were lodged in the Hawkins County Jail on Thursday.
