Families, serious cyclists tackle Bays Mountain bicycle trails

That simple shout sent about two dozen bicyclists whizzing into the woods Monday evening at Bays Mountain Park.

They were bound for a roughly four-mile round trip — the “Family Ride” portion of the Fun Fest Mountain Bike Rally & Family Ride. The event, a longstanding member of the Fun Fest lineup, is sponsored by Larry’s Cycle Shop.

Shop owner Larry Coomer said the number of participants for this year’s Mountain Bike Rally & Family Ride seemed to be up over last year — but the event has always drawn a crowd of all ages.

Helmets were required gear for all participants.

A clear standout for optional equipment at the Family Ride: one bike sported training wheels.

Coomer said that wasn’t a first for the event, which typically draws cyclists with varying levels of biking expertise.

One thing, however, that doesn’t vary: enthusiasm.

“We’re thankful to be able to sponsor this event each year,” Coomer said. “We’re happy to have this way of giving back to the community, which has given so much to us over the years. Some are more serious than others about the competition aspect of it, but everyone seems to have fun with it.”

The Bike Rally portion of the event sends riders on a 12-mile trek on the park’s trails, Coomer said.

This year about 90 cyclists entered the rally portion of the event, Coomer said.
