MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Guns are being banned on the famed Beale Street in Memphis despite a new law allowing them in bars and restaurants effective July 14.

Businesses in the entertainment district are putting up signs and beefing up security to make sure patrons aren't armed.

The new law, which is under a court challenge, gives discretion to businesses to ban the weapons.

According to WREG-TV, the Beale Street Merchant's Association and Performa Entertainment, the group that manages Beale, plan to screen everyone who steps on the street.

Beale Street is known as the birthplace of the blues.
