According to a report by the Bristol Herald Courier, local doctors are sending a simple message to their patients: If we catch you trying to get prescription drugs illegally, we will send you to jail.A new state law that took effect July 1 requires doctors and health-care providers to report anyone they suspect is trying to fraudulently obtain prescriptions for controlled substances.“It says we ‘shall’ turn them in and we’re going to take that seriously,” said Mark Woodard, the emergency medical director at Bristol Regional Medical Center. The law contains no penalties for doctors who miss or fail to turn in drug-seekers, Woodard told the Herald Courier. But those who are caught trying to illegally get the drugs could spend two to 12 years in prison if they are convicted. CLICK HERE for the full report.
