Tourism professionals and community leaders from across the region gathered at the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center for the event.
Susan Whitaker, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, was also on hand, recognizing Claudia Moody for 20 years of service as executive director of the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association. Attendees gave Moody a standing ovation.
The Pinnacle Awards are presented each year to individuals, groups, businesses and organizations that significantly contribute to the region’s economy through tourism promotion and development.
Entries were submitted from throughout the region this year.
In the Special Events category, nominees included festivals, tournaments, concerts, shows, reenactments and more. The winners were:
•The Tennessee Valley Showcase Marching Band Competition, Kingsport Convention & Visitors Bureau, in the Hospitality Organizations Division.
•The Bicentennial Celebration for President Andrew Johnson, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, National Park Service, in the Heritage Tourism Division.
Two merit awards were presented in the Special Events category. They went to Barter Theater for its 75th year celebration and to the town of Jonesborough for Jonesborough Days 2008: Farmin’ on the Fourth.
In the Special Projects category, nominees included exhibits, resource publications, photography, educational programs, trade shows, familiarization tours and other initiatives. Pinnacle Award winners were:
•“History, Heritage and the Constitution,” the Doak House Museum at Tusculum College, Education Division.
•Sculpture Walk, Cultural Arts Division, city of Kingsport, in the Municipalities Division.
In the Advertising & Promotions — Print category, nominations were submitted for brochures, magazines, newspaper supplements and print ads. The winners were:
•The Kingsport Visitors Guide, Kingsport Convention & Visitors Bureau, in the Hospitality Organizations Division.
•“A Century of Furniture: The Rose Cabinet Shops,” the William King Regional Arts Center, in the Heritage Tourism Division.
•Historic Jonesborough’s Official Visitors Guide, Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center and the town of Jonesborough, in the Municipalities Division.
•The National Storytelling Festival Campaign, Hillhouse Graphic Design, in the Business Division.
In the Advertising and Promotions — Multi-Media category, nominations were submitted for videos, Web sites, online campaigns, DVDs, CD/Rom, and music CDs. Winners were:
•Visitbristoltnva.org, the Bristol Convention & Visitors Bureau, in the Hospitality Organizations Division — Web sites.
•The Interactive Web site for the Doak House Museum at Tusculum College, in the Education Division — Web sites.
•“Girlfriend Getaway,” Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau, in the Hospitality Organization Division — online campaign.
The Pinnacle Award for public relations, in the Hospitality Organizations Division, went to “Direct Mail Public Relations Media Boxes,” Johnson City Convention & Visitors Bureau.
And the Pinnacle Award in the volunteer category went to Tim Lingerfelt of Erwin for his impact on the tourism industry.
