Morristown red light camera records T-bone crash

Staff Report • May 1, 2009 at 12:00 AM

A red light camera on Highway 25E in Morristown wasn’t a factor in a T-bone crash Thursday afternoon that landed a man and woman in a medical helicopter bound for Knoxville, according to police.According to a report by the Morriston Citizen Tribune the captured video, however, provides convincing proof that a Cocke County man with a connection to Hamblen County caused the crash, according to Maj. Michelle Jones with the Morristown Police Department. The traffic light turned red 7.9 seconds before Albert Walker’s Nissan Altima sped through the intersection and broadsided a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Valerie Lane, a 48-year-old Chuckey resident, Jones said. The Redflex traffic camera measured Walker’s speed at 49 mph, 4 mph over the posted speed limit. At that rate of travel, his car would have been more than a tenth of a mile from the stop bar when the light turned red.Jones, who viewed the video remotely from her office, says the recording indicates that Walker, 68, didn’t apply his brakes prior to the collision, which occurred at 12:07 p.m. Thursday.
