According to a Kingsport Police incident report, an officer was dispatched to the office, 2033 Meadowview Lane, Suite 200, on Friday afternoon. The manager, Brenda Nunley, said a money bag containing $665 in cash and debit charge receipts had been taken from the check-out desk.
Police say HMG employee Rebecca Kate Carroll, 28, of 5921 Orebank Road, was developed as a suspect. Carroll denied taking the money bag, but according to the police officer who wrote the report, "As I spoke to her more her story became more suspicious."
Carroll allegedly denied her car was on the HMG parking lot, and then said it was. Shortly thereafter her husband arrived at the scene, and being co-owner of the car, gave consent to search the vehicle.
Beneath the passenger seat police found the money bag. It was empty.
Carroll then admitted to stealing the money, according to police, because she was having financial difficulties. She allegedly gave it to her husband, saying it was money she had been saving.
The cash, which police said was over $300, was returned to Nunley.
Carroll was charged with theft over $500 and taken to Kingsport City Jail. She has since been released on bond.
