73-year-old college basketball player -- and former Times-News editor -- ruled academically ineligible

Staff Report • Feb 20, 2009 at 12:00 AM

Former Times-News city editor Ken Mink, who has gained national media attention for being a 73-year-old basketball player at Roane State junior college, has been ruled academically ineligible to compete.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, the issue is the minimum amount of credits an athlete must pass in a semester to keep his eligibility. Mink, who hadn't been in school in a half century, carried the minimum 12 hours in the fall semester and was doing well in all but Spanish.

Due to Mink's ineligibility, the Harriman college will have to forfeit their last game. Mink played in the Hiwassee game on Feb. 7 and scored two points.
