Volunteers rescue coon dog from Greene County cave

Staff Report • Feb 9, 2009 at 12:00 AM

According to the Greeneville Sun a 9-year-old English Blue Tick coon hound was rescued by volunteers Saturday afternoon from a northeastern Greene County cave where he had been trapped for a week.

The dog apparently chased a raccoon into a narrow cave about 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 and fell into a 25-foot-deep pit in the cave.

Travis Strum, Sailor's owner, said about a hundred volunteers worked nearly around the clock since Wednesday trying to find a way to reach Sailor.

The volunteers used dynamite, jackhammers and a backhoe during attempts to enlarge the tiny opening of the cave about a half-mile from his home where Sailor was trapped.Dynamite finally did the trick, according to Strum. A blast enlarged the opening enough for volunteer Josh Dunn, of Afton, to wriggle into the narrow opening and make his way to and rescue Sailor.
