Tennessee has highest beer tax in the U.S.

The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that Tennessee now the highest beer tax in the nation, according to a preliminary review of 2008 data by the Beer Institute.The state and local tax assessed on beer in Tennessee is now $33.25 per 31-gallon barrel, up from $32.28 in 2007. The new figure puts Tennessee just ahead of runner-up Alaska, which has a total beer tax of $33.17 per barrel.The figure does not include a federal beer tax and sales taxes. If you add those, it works out to an average of about $6 in taxes for a typical case of 24 12-ounce bottles of beer.
