Grainger couple donates $1 million to help families buy homes

According to a report in the Morristown Citizen-Tribune Wayne and Betty Shirley of Rutledge have donated $1 million to help 45 low and moderate income Grainger County residents achieve the American dream of home ownership.Wayne Shirley is the president of Citizens Bank and Trust of Grainger County. Pastor Betty Shirley is the minister of two Lakeway churches: St. Mary’s United Methodist in Grainger and Russellville United Methodist Church in Russellville. She preaches at St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. then hurries to Russellville for an 11 a.m. service.The Clinch-Powell Resource Conservation and Development Council will distribute the money and the Shirleys will have no say in who gets the grants for down payment assistance. Those who get the one of the grants must attend a class on budgeting money and participate in building of their home.
