Mount Carmel Police Department Officer Ken Lunsford stated in his report he was parked on Highway 11-W near the Belmont Avenue intersection when he clocked a westbound green 1993 BMW at 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop on the BMW, the vehicle allegedly accelerated
and continued westbound on 11-W for approximately two miles into the Church Hill city limits, reaching speeds of 100 mph.
“The vehicle passed another vehicle on the right shoulder of the road near Pal’s on 11-W and then turned northbound for approximately 0.2 of a mile before the driver stopped due to the road being blocked by a metal guardrail,” Lunsford stated in his report.
The driver, Jack Wallen Jr., 20, 223 Pond Springs Road, Kingsport, was arrested and charged with felony evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, speeding 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, violation of the registration law, and failure to show proof of insurance.
A passenger in Wallen’s vehicle, Hunter Jackson, 28, was not charged.
Wallen was released from the Hawkins County Jail on $5,000 bond.
He is scheduled for arraignment in Hawkins County Sessions Court on Dec. 31.
