Fire destroys barn filled with 150 bales of hay

Staff Report • Sep 19, 2008 at 12:00 AM

According to a report by the Greeneville Sun, a Cedar Creek Road barn that contained 150 round bales of hay was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin on Thursday afternoon despite the efforts of at least three volunteer fire departments.

David Darnell, owner of the 40-by-80-foot barn, said by telephone from the scene that he was riding past the barn on his all-terrain vehicle about 3:30 p.m. when he smelled smoke.

Darnell said he opened the barn\\\'s doors and used a farm tractor to remove \\\"five or six bales\\\" of hay before the stacked hay erupted in flames.

\\\"I called 911 as soon as I saw it,\\\" he said.
