CARTERS VALLEY — The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office hopes video surveillance of an attempted smash and grab burglary early Wednesday morning at a Carters Valley market will help identify the perpetrator.

The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Valley Mart, 6125 W. Carters Valley Road, Church Hill, when an unidentified male smashed through the glass front door to enter the business.

HCSO Sgt. Chad Gillenwater reported seeing the cash register lying on the floor. The business owner told investigators the register had no paper money, and nothing could be found missing. The value of the broken door was $300.

A witness observed a white four-door SUV — possibly a Jeep Cherokee — parked near the front of the building. The vehicle then sped away eastbound on Carters Valley Road.

The HCSO acquired video surveillance of the incident from inside the store and in the parking lot.

Sheriff Roger Christian said his detectives were unable to identify any suspects from the video. But the video has been sent to a specialist to be enhanced, and Christian hopes to be able to release images and video to the public today or Friday.
