Eastman, state officials say chemical spill in Holston River caused no harm

KINGSPORT — No environmental harm occurred when some material used in processes at Eastman Chemical Co. accidentally spilled into the Holston River late last week.

According to officials from Eastman and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the spill occurred Friday when one of the company’s vessels overheated, which forced a valve to open and release liquid material to relieve pressure.

Employees sprayed water on the material — described as a heating transfer agent. The material and water ran into the Holston River and dissipated.

Eastman spokeswoman Betty Payne said TDEC was notified of the incident.
