ROGERSVILLE — Work on Hawkins County’s $37.9 million phase three school building addition and renovation project will continue until 2010, and county leaders agreed Monday to issue bonds for funding the project in increments as opposed to all at once.
The Hawkins County Commission’s Budget Committee voted Monday to issue a $9.7 million bond this fiscal year to cover initial work on the project.
The full commission will be asked next Monday to give final approval to that plan.
A representative from Cumberland Securities, which administers Hawkins County bond issues, attended Monday’s Budget Committee meeting and advised that the bonds for this long-term project be issued at various dates to be determined by the schedule of the project.
Drawings have been completed for the renovations and classroom additions at Bulls Gap School, Cherokee High School and Volunteer High School. Aside from a few details, the drawings for the new fifth- and sixth-grade school in Church Hill are completed as well.
Phase three also includes a new Clinch School, and land acquisition for that project has not yet been finalized.
Construction bids for the Cherokee, Volunteer and Bulls Gap aspects of the project are expected to be advertised in January, and it will likely take two months after that for a bid to be approved.
The school board will be presented with the complete set of drawings for final review and approval before they are advertised for construction bids.
Architect Don Solt’s initial projections called for construction to begin at Bulls Gap next August and completion in time for the beginning of the 2009-10 school year.
Construction at Volunteer and Cherokee was initially expected to begin in May and be completed in time for the beginning of the 2009-10 school year.
Work on the new Church Hill school would begin in June and would be completed by January of 2010.
The goal is for work to begin on the new Clinch School in September and be completed in January 2010.
Solt told the Board of Education earlier this month the overall project is slightly ahead of schedule.
