Retired Duffield coal miner wins $250,000 lottery prize

DUFFIELD — A retired coal miner from Duffield won the second-highest prize in the Virginia Mega Millions Lottery.

Kenneth Ricketts was watching the news when he saw his lottery numbers displayed on the television for the Aug. 31 drawing.

The numbers — except for the Mega Ball number — were the same. The correct pick won Ricketts $250,000.

“I got pretty excited and nervous,” he told Virginia Lottery officials.

His winning numbers were 8-18-22-40-44. If he had matched the Mega Ball number, 11, he would have won part of the $330 million jackpot.

Four tickets did hit the jackpot in that drawing, including one purchased in Buckingham, Va.

Ricketts’ ticket was one of four that won $250,000. His number was picked by the computer, and his ticket was purchased at Red Roof Discount Cigarette Center in Weber City.
