Johnson City man dies of Watagua boat explosion injuries

A Johnson City man who was seriously injured when his boat exploded on Watauga Lake on Friday died in Vanderbilt Medical Center late Tuesday afternoon. Rodney Oakes, 72, was flown to Vanderbilt for treatment of burns he suffered in the fire. The explosion occurred while Oakes’ 36-foot houseboat was moored in a slip at Lakeshore Marina, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The TWRA is investigating the cause of the explosion and fire.
