ROCK SPRINGS - A man died Sunday evening in a mobile home fire in the Rock Springs community.

According to a report filed by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, Johnny T. Riley, 60, was found deceased in the bathroom of his residence at 456 W. Valley Drive, Lot 22. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters were dispatched to the residence at 5:27 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told dispatchers the victim had been outside, but they noticed him go inside, and not long after that smoke began pouring out of the residence.

Sullivan West Volunteer Fire Department Chief Drew Deakins said the fire apparently started in the kitchen area and Riley was found in bathroom, which was at the same end of the residence as the kitchen.

Deakins said there was significant smoke damage throughout the residence, but the fire damage mainly occurred in the kitchen and bathroom area.

"When the first responders got on the scene the trailer was filled with smoke on all sides," Deakins said. "The first team made entry looking for a person we understood was supposed to be inside. Eventually we found the person deceased on the far end of the house where the fire originated.

"As soon as we got on scene everybody got into that house trying to find him."

The family dog, which was inside the residence when the fire occurred, was rescued. The dog appeared to be OK and was returned to the family member by firefighters.

Also assisting at the scene was the Warriors Path Volunteer Fire Department, Sullivan County EMS and the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office.

SCSO Capt. Keith Elton said arson investigators would be on the scene this morning as a matter of routine, although there was no reason Sunday evening to suspect the fire was intentionally set. The SCSO anticipates releasing more information at some point today, Elton said.
