KINGSPORT — The number of known retail stores coming to the Kingsport Pavilion shopping complex has grown by two.

Kingsport issued building permits to Dick’s Sporting Goods and Books-A-Million this week, said Assistant City Manager of Development Jeff Fleming.

Fleming said Dick’s Sporting Goods’ permit is for the construction of a $1.156 million building, while Books-A-Million submitted a $375,000 building permit.

Kingsport Building Department officials say the new Dick’s Sporting Goods store will be 43,818 square feet, while Books-A-Million will be 15,882 square feet.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Dick’s Sporting Goods operates 294 stores in 34 states primarily throughout the Eastern half of the United States. The company also owns Golf Galaxy, a golf specialty retailer with 65 stores in 24 states.

Books-A-Million, founded in 1917, is based out of Birmingham, Ala., and is the third-largest book retailer in the nation. The company operates more than 200 stores in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

The national retailers will join Target, Kohl’s, Old Navy and Shoe Carnival as confirmed tenants at the Kingsport Pavilion, located at 2626 E. Stone Drive on the old Mason Dixon site.

Construction began earlier this year on the 78-acre shopping complex, which is expected to open in October with more than 30 stores and restaurants.

Kingsport Pavilion is being built in two phases. The first phase is a $55 million development on 51 acres from Clark Branch to Leslie Branch. This phase, which includes the main anchors, will total around 425,000 square feet. Phase two includes 27 acres east of Leslie Branch. It will add about 200,000 square feet to the shopping complex.
