A 30-year-old Mount Carmel man who said his live-in girlfriend had betrayed him and Hell's Angels were after him has been arrested and is in the Hawkins County Jail under a suicide watch.

The arrest came after Gary Beckwith, 30, 337 Hemlock St., held his girlfriend, Michelle Polinski, 33, her 18-month-old child and 11 year-old daughter at gun point at their home. The toddler is Beckwith's child, according to police.

Police were alerted to the situation a little before 2 a.m. when the 11-year-old girl escaped and ran out of the house. She called police and told them her mother was being held at gunpoint.

Police arrived at the Hemlock Street home shortly after 2 a.m. and began attempting to contact the suspect inside the house. Those efforts were not successful.

At about 4 a.m. Beckwith reportedly put down his gun and the woman escaped, running from the house with the toddler in her arms.

Beckwith ran from the house after Polinski and was subdued by police officers.

Mount Carmel Police Chief Jeff Jackson said Beckwith appeared to be on drugs and was "talking out of his head" when he was arrested. Beckwith has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
