BLOUNTVILLE - Cathy Smith's stewardship of Tri-Cities Regional Airport's finances was hailed Tuesday by airport officials saddened by her passing.

Smith, 51, TCRA's finance director, died Monday after complications from cancer.

"She's going to be sorely missed," Airport Commissioner Dan Mahoney of Johnson City said.

"I will miss her personally and professionally," TCRA Executive Director Patrick Wilson said. "Airport employees have stepped up to do all they can for Cathy and her family."

Smith first came to TCRA in 1988 as manager of accounting functions for the Airport Commission. In 1993, she was promoted to finance director. She was responsible for developing TCRA's accounting and finance functions into a modern system to meet the complex needs of the aviation industry.

Smith's work with federal and state airport grants made possible many of the significant facility improvements that have occurred in recent years, according to a TCRA release.

She was a member of the American Association of Airport Executives, and contributor to many national conferences focusing on airport finance and administration. Smith was recognized with an "Award of Excellence" during each of the past seven years from the Government Financial Officers Association.
