Bristol, Tenn., police are advising the public about a check-cashing scam after responding to a forgery.
On Thursday, Bristol authorities responded to the Cash Express on Volunteer Parkway in reference to a forgery in progress.
A person reportedly was trying to cash a check valued at $2,940.30 from a Dallas-based company called "Aviall."
An investigation revealed that the individual trying to cash the check had received a letter from a company called "Latex Finance Incorporated" informing them that they had won $50,000.
The letter informed the recipient that the enclosed check was "assistance" to pay for tax and administrative expenses. Bristol police are encouraging anyone who receives these or similar checks not to contact the sender or to attempt cashing the checks.
