The body of a man believed to have drowned has been recovered from Cherokee lake in Grainger County.

According to Tennessee Valley Authority spokesman Gil Francis, the body of Gary Ryan Stringer, 26, of Jefferson City, was recovered Monday.

"Apparently he was swimming late (Sunday) afternoon," Francis said. "We got a call in to TVA Police around five o'clock. He was trying to swim from one island to the next, got about midway out and went under."

A search for the body was conducted by the TVA in cooperation with Grainger County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
