The Adventist Health System and Wellmont in December reached an agreement to share ownership of the Greeneville hospital.
Effective today, Adventist transferred ownership to a new not-for-profit corporation in which Wellmont serves as majority owner.
"The affiliation will allow us to deliver even stronger and more efficient patient care to our community. We will become a greater community asset," Carlyle Walton, Takoma's president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. "We share the same Christian vision of providing compassionate, superior health care for all those lives we touch."
Among changes at the 108-bed hospital:
•Takoma has adopted Wellmont's safest hospital initiative. Dr. Richard Salluzzo, president and CEO of Wellmont, is working to make the health system have the safest hospitals in America.
•Cardiovascular Associates, Wellmont's partner in the Regional Heartcare Network, has opened an office at Takoma and has board-certified cardiologists.
•Medical and surgical services have expanded at Takoma, including cross coverage of orthopedic services with sister facility Hawkins County Memorial Hospital in Rogersville, and hospitalist services with Holston Medical Group. A physician recruiting campaign also is under way for the hospital based on a physician needs assessment, and the transition of existing Takoma physicians into Wellmont Physician Services has increased the availability of specialty services to patients.
•Capital improvement updates have occurred to the operation room, and new equipment has been added to the nuclear medicine operation.
•More efficient joint purchasing power and expansion of managed care contracting also have benefited Takoma.
"We look forward to working with the physicians and employees of Takoma to improve health care for the people of Greene County," Salluzzo said.
