Oswalt was chosen to receive the ACA/Surdna Citizen Scholar Service Learning Award. She will receive funding to aid in the development of a temporary exhibit at the ALLM entitled "Civil War Battlefield Photography."
Oswalt will also receive a student stipend while she completes the project. She will be mentored by Assistant Curator Michael Lynch and City of Harrogate Historian Dennis Chumley throughout the project.
Sweet has been chosen to receive the Lee B. Ledford Student Research Endowment. The award supports research experiences for students enrolled at ACA member institutions. Sweet's project is entitled "Research into Reality: How Research Supports Exhibits." Working with ALLM Curator Steven Wilson, Sweet will research, conceptualize and produce the narrative script for the traveling exhibit "No Man's Yoke: Slaves and Slavery in Tennessee." Sweet will receive funds for her research and a student stipend through the grant.
The Appalachian College Association is a nonprofit consortium of 35 private two- and four-year liberal arts colleges and universities spread across the central Appalachian mountains in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Collectively these higher education institutions serve more than 39,000 students.
The Association helps develop and share ideas, information, programs and resources to achieve its goals, which include promoting cooperation and collaboration among its member institutions to serve the people of Appalachia through higher education and related services. It also funds projects for faculty and students of member institutions. The ACA functions independently of any one institution to serve all its members.
