Highway Superintendent Johnny Deakins requested that $278,000 be moved from his fund balance to cover employee medical insurance. Deakins' request passed unanimously.
"We're already $179,000 over on medical insurance, and this would finish out the year for us," Deakins said. "We've had five large claims so far."
Also passed by the committee and requested by Deakins was the transfer of $3,200 from a salt line item to the maintenance and service vehicles line item. There was also a $10,000 transfer request from the department's fund balance to the maintenance and service buildings line item.
Movement of $179,000 from the county solid waste department's fund balance was requested by Solid Waste Director Charles Baines and passed unanimously by the committee.
Out of the requested funds for solid waste, $150,000 was moved to cover employee and dependent insurance, with $15,000 going toward disposal fees, $10,000 to maintenance and repair service, and $4,000 to diesel fuel.
After budget amendments were approved for the county school system, Director of Schools Grant Rowland gave the committee an update on construction of Grandview and Ridgeview elementaries.
"Crews are putting in the electrical system and the plumbing at Grandview," Rowland said. "They've started on the digging for the gymnasium.
"At Ridgeview, they had been blasting rock, but it will be a little while before they get footers in out there."
Rowland said renovations at Daniel Boone High School were moving along with the good weather as blocks and footers had been installed to floor level and the electrical system was currently being installed.
At David Crockett High School, bids for renovations were scheduled to be opened at the Central Office on April 24.
