Today, one man is behind bars in connection with the crime, and warrants have been issued for two other individuals -- both juveniles.
According to Sheriff Fred Newman, Brandon Matthew Barker, 20, of 393 Hugh Cox Road, Jonesborough, Tenn., has been arrested. He is charged with attempted capital murder, attempted armed robbery, burglary and conspiracy. He is held in Abingdon's Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
Police are still searching for Phillip D. Buttry Jr., 16, of Marion, Va., and Dustin Eric Trotter, 17, of Galax, Va. Warrants for attempted capital murder, burglary, attempted robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and conspiracy have been issued for each.
Newman says detectives have learned one of the juveniles was dropped off at the home of Douglas E. Mason, 33, 10602 Forest Hills Drive, Glade Spring, on Monday evening in an attempt to steal money. Police believe that together with Barker, all three conspired to commit the crime.
"Shortly after midnight, two other juveniles burst through the door, brandished handguns and attempted to rob the two victims," Newman said in a press release. "A scuffle ensued and both juveniles shot one of the victims (Mason). The suspects then fled the residence without any money or items being taken."
"Our agency will continue to follow leads until these two juveniles are apprehended," Newman said.
Mason remains in serious condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center, with gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and thigh. The other resident of the home, Kathy Campbell, was not injured.
